The green transition is transforming industries worldwide, but gender diversity at the top remains limited. According to Denominator’s latest data, just 22% of top leadership roles across green transition industries are occupied by women. This signals a critical imbalance in who holds influence in shaping a sustainable future.
Our latest insight, developed in partnership with The Female Quotient, explores how companies leading on climate goals perform on social dimensions, including gender, race and ethnicity, disability, and age.
Climate-committed companies outperform global averages
Companies aligned with the UN-backed Race to Zero campaign show markedly stronger gender representation. These organizations have 63% more women in top leadership positions than the global average. This reinforces the idea that sustainability efforts often correlate with stronger diversity and inclusion outcomes.
Green energy remains below global benchmarks
Despite its progressive positioning, the Green Energy sector lags behind global averages when it comes to gender diversity. Women account for just 22% of board seats and 15% of executive roles. These figures point to persistent barriers for women even in industries driving climate solutions.
Oil & gas sees the lowest representation of women
The Oil & Gas sector continues to trail other industries on gender inclusion. Only 18% of board members and 13% of executive leaders are women. These numbers highlight the need for legacy sectors to adopt more diverse leadership practices as part of their transition strategies.
A broader picture of diversity performance
This analysis is part of Denominator’s fourth annual measurement of global diversity performance. By benchmarking companies on social indicators alongside environmental goals, we help organizations align their ESG strategies with equitable representation.
Data to drive inclusion in sustainable industries
Gender equality is not just a social issue—it’s essential to the success of the green transition. As industries reshape in response to climate challenges, ensuring equal access to leadership roles will be key to building resilient, forward-looking companies.
