Voluntary turnover rate | Global analysis

Turnover rate isn’t just about who’s leaving – it’s a reflection of how a company is leading.

When analyzing voluntary employee turnover by sector on a global level, we find:

📈 The services and consumer sectors face the greatest challenges with retention.

📈 Retail tops the list, with 25% of employees deciding to change jobs in the past year.

📈 Hospitality, consumer services and consumer goods follow, but with about half the turnover rate.

📉 The technical and industrial sectors report stronger retention.

📉 Utilities lead with 5% of voluntary turnover.

In comparison, retail's voluntary turnover rate is 400% higher than in utilities and nearly twice as high as in hospitality and other sectors.

Despite sector-specific differences, voluntary turnover shows how successfully companies are keeping their people engaged.

According to Moody’s Ratings’ human capital report, a company’s ability to manage its workforce, through effective labor relations, talent retention strategies, and adaptability during economic shifts, directly affects its productivity, profitability, and ultimately, its credit quality.

In this context, having the right data is essential, not just to stay informed, but to make decisions that strengthen workforce management and long-term financial performance.
